Cartago in Costa Rica

Ujarrás Ruins

The first church was built in Costa Rica during the 17th century.

Irazú Volcano National Park

Irazú is the highest volcano in the country and towers over 3,432 meters above sea level. At 53 kilometers from San José and exactly 31 kilometers northeast of Cartago, it is accessible via a modern and colorful road.

Colonial Church of Orosí

It is one of the oldest buildings in the country, dating from the Spanish colonial period. It was built in 1767 by Franciscan friars and is dedicated to San José.

Guayabo National Monument

It is located on the slopes of Turrialba Volcano, in the province of Cartago, 83 kilometers from San José. Guayabo is the most important archeological site in Costa Rica: its wonders are found throughout the area: petroglyphs, mounds, pathways, and other stone structures of ceremonial character.
